Aperture controls the size of the shutter, it works like your pupil in your eye controlling the amount of light that hits the senser, by making the aperture smaller such as F1, you can increases the focal distance of your image. There are some examples photos I have taken below.
The next set of images show the effect on the depth of field much better, I have started from an aperture of f10 and worked down to f3.5
